Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. Hard to believe the official kick off to summer fun is already here, our first in Richmond, VA. It seems like yesterday we were all talking about how crazy the winter was and now we are lathering the sunscreen, wearing the new shades and enjoying the warm evenings.
I'd like to use this blog post to reflect on the why for this great weekend. Formerly called Decoration Day, it's a time to honor those fallen in service to our country and it was truly a day for decorating the graves of soldiers. The practice stared in my new state of Virginia, with the decoration of a Civil War soldier’s grave. The name changed to Memorial Day in 1882 but the practice continued and grew to include parades, honor guards, lowering the flag, cookouts, family time, and more.
As we move through this weekend, let us remember those that have given their lives for our liberty and freedoms. It is their sacrifices (and those of their loved ones left behind as well as their brothers and sisters in arms that continued the fight without them), that have helped form us as a nation.
Cheers to you, with our heart felt gratitude and thankfulness, to the known and the unknown, we honor you this weekend. Your view is amazing I’m sure!
